caf•fe lat•te (n). A strong espresso coffee topped with steamed frothed milk. Latte is Italian for milk. It usually refers to one of several types of coffee drinks made with hot milk. The evolution of this term is relatively recent and probably dates from the spread of the 1980s Seattle coffee craze to the rest of the United States. Can you say Starbucks?!?!?!. Talk about evolution/revolution in the coffee-drinking realm makes me wonder what my grandparents might think about the price of one of these fancy coffee beverages. Some days, though, you just have to have it. Nothing like a fresh cup of java; the cost is well worth it as one savors that first sip. In completing a bit of ‘net research, I’ve learned that some cafes create designs in the frothed milk atop a latte.
