Geocache Description:

Dunolly Ford Bridge is the second-oldest remaining bridge over the Hunter River at Singleton, it is still in use. The cache location is easily accessed from either side of the river, the area is close to the Singleton CBD, and the New England Highway which formerly routed over the bridge.

Please ensure container is replaced in exactly the same position so it is not likely to be muggled. It should not be visible from the road.

Small swaps are OK for this cache.

Also please BYO pen / pencil to log cache just in case.

The Dunolly Ford bridge over the Hunter River at Singleton was built in 1905 and was used as the primary road river crossing for more than 80 years. Not a lot of historical information is easily found so if anyone can share some knowledge or details / links please log these.

When built, road bridges in NSW were still dominated by timber but two pioneering steel road trusses were built over the Hunter River, Dunolly Ford Bridge at Singleton and another at Luskintyre (where there is also a cache: (visit link)

The official river height is read from the guage on the Eastern pier. Singleton has seen 12 major floods events (over 13m river depth) since Dunolly Bridge was opened, the most severe of which was in 1955 where over 1250 homes were flooded. Other significant flood years were 1913, 1930, 1971, 1976, 1977 and as recently as 2007.

RTA has transferred the bridge to Singleton Council at some point in the recent past.

Dunolly Bridge is not far from the centre of town, where standard amenities can be found. If you have an interest in history, try the Singleton Heritage Walk - a short stroll where you get too look at some old buildings and stuff. Further details and general tourist information are available from the Singleton Visitor's Information Centre, located around 300m East of the bridge at 39 George Street (New England Highway) - S32 33.667 E151 10.471, it is open 9am-5pm. (visit link)

Please note: This is an urban cache in a muggle frequented area, stealth is normally required. The cache is hidden so muggles should not find it, please try not to give away the location or create unwanted attention - people may be watching!
