Geocache Description:

This cache is dedicated to the Hookerman, one of New Jersey's most famous ghosts.

The tale of the Hookerman is a common one, but the story is most famous here along the Columbia Trail in Washington Township and Chester. It goes like this:

There was once a railroad worker whose job was to stand on the train and signal others with his lantern. One night he tripped and his arm was cut off by the train wheels. His arm was replaced with a hook, but after he died the ghost of the Hookerman returned, with his lantern hanging from his hook, to find his lost arm.

On a quiet night the hovering light can be sporadically seen traveling down the Columbia Trail, where the tracks once were.

On any given night in the 70's and 80's there would be dozens of teens waiting near the tracks at the intersection of North Four Bridges Road to spot the Hookerman, which may be one of the reasons that the tracks were removed.

Apart from the popular legend, there are many scientific theories as to why the lights exist. Some say swamp gas causes natural earth lights, while others claim it is the piezoelectric effect caused by quartz under pressure.

There have also been several "web-shorts" related to the Hookerman: (visit link) (visit link)

Inside the cache are several articles related to the Hookerman as well as the usual stuff.

Although it may seem appealing, I do not suggest searching for this one at night, since most Morris County Parks close at dusk. If, however, you want to try and catch a glimpse of the Hookerman, the intersection of the Columbia Trail and North Four Bridges Road seems to be a hot-spot of Hookerman activity. Good Luck!
