Geocache Description:

In 1917 the Town of Caribou appropriated $1,000 for a monument to commemmorate its war dead. Olley Fair instigated the plan and the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) collected money for a flag pole and flag. The name of the park in which the monument stands was changed that year from Hussey to Monument Park. The monument was unveiled by children from the country schools on May 30, 1918.

It is an interesting but little noted fact that while the granite soldier in the park is a memorial to men of World War I, the figure that stands there is a replica of a soldier of the Civil War. Perhaps it was appropriate, for most people nowadays think of the memorial as one to all of Caribou's war dead in all wars.
