the american bison is the largest terrestrial mammal in north america. many years ago the bison inhabited the great plains in massive herds, ranging from canada to mexico. a bison can reach up to six and half feet tall, ten feet long, and weigh as much as 2,500 pounds. before the introduction of horses, bison were herded by native americans into large chutes made of rocks and willow branches and then stampeded over cliffs.
bison were hunted almost to extinction in the 19th century and were reduced to a few hundred head by the mid-1880s. many professional hunters, such as bill cody, killed over a hundred animals at a single stand and many thousands in their career. commercial hide hunting outfits during the 1870s were harvesting over 2,000 hides per day. as few as 750 bison existed in 1890. bison hunting was finally prohibited and conservation methods introduced. the current population is estimated at 350,000, but this is compared to an estimated 60 million in the mid-19th century. the only continuously wild bison herd in the U.S. is in yellowstone park and numbers between 3,000 and 3,500.
