“Michigan Spirit
Quest”
The Michigan Spirit Quest series of
geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries
built by MICHIGAN Pioneers. This series is inspired by and a
continuation of the Indiana Spirit Quest caches created by
SixDogTeam. In just over two and a half years, the SPIRIT QUEST has
grown to over five hundred and fifty caches and the hiders have
grown to twenty-five cacher teams in 3 states and one province,
most of which are comprised of Dogs and their Humans.
Over 1,000 cachers have logged over 20,000
finds. One cache machine found 102 ISQ caches in a single day
(daylight hours only).

"The Ties that
Bind"
WELCOME TO Newton Twp
Cemetery, Calhoun County, MI. This cemetery was established in
1838, the first burial being of 2 year old Johnny Brininstool. A
predominantly agricultural community, although more people are
commuting out here from the city these days, many of the names in
this cemetery can trace their families from the old section here,
through the new section across the street, and onward. They’ve been
baptized, married, raised kids, and will be buried right here. When
I researched this, I knew I would find several generations of
families here, but was almost a little surprised to find how many
veterans are buried here. In the old section, I found many civil
war veterans (including my own great-grandfather), a few WWI, and
one WWII. Most of the veterans from WWII and those serving since
are in the new section of the cemetery on the south side of the
road. I even found a maker indicating that the man was a veteran of
the war of 1812 before settling out here in Michigan. I am happy to
report that although there is some signs of wear, even the oldest
part of the cemetery here is in fairly good shape. In some spots
where the original stone is lost or unreadable, a plaque has even
been set. Please, even if the gates are open, don’t pull past the
fence. You can park perpendicular to the road up to the fence,
that’s the standard parking here, or you can park in the church lot
across the street. Also, please access the cache from within the
fence. While it may be possible to access it other ways, outside
the fence is private property and we don’t have permission to be
there.
The location has
been forgotten, but the name is
not.
FIND LOGS ON THIS CACHE THAT INDICATE NIGHT CACHING
WILL BE DELETED WITHOUT
NOTICE!
The cache container is
a micro, I will start it with a pencil but be safe: BYOP.
The cache is not located near a grave... If you find a fallen
US flag, please stick it back in the ground or replace it. As
always, please be respectful, and cache in, trash out. Say a
prayer for our brave troops, fighting overseas. God Bless
America!
MSQ caches are
