This cache is called "Blue Hole". The Blue Hole is an abandoned Euclid Bluestone quarry from the late 19th / early 20th century. It is named for the unique blue color of the spring water, reflecting the sky and the bluestone that was quarried. Through years of natural leaf deposition and degradation, the bluestone has been covered and the water has darkened. The Blue Hole was quarried for flagstones, some of which were used as sidewalk slabs throughout Cuyahoga County.
Many individuals find this area very serene and peaceful, and this is one of the last remanining natural ponds in Cuyahoga County that is not surrounded by development. This area is known for its large beech trees and diverse wildlife (wild turkeys, great barred owls, fox, deer, etc).
The Blue Hole is located on City of Independence property, but is surrounded by National Park and private property. If it looks like you are in someone's back yard, you probably are, so please do not trespass.
Be careful! Depending on your route there is very steep terrain in this area.
This cache has two options to start from. (Terrain/Dist)
Option 1: More difficult terrain and short hike (3.5/.1 mi)
Option 2: Easier terrain and longer hike (2.0/.5 mi)
Option 1: Drive down to the bottom of Stone Road, make a hairpin turn back to the west and go to the end of the road. Please do not park in the driveways. You will be close to the waypoint "Start 1". Go past the guard rail a little ways to a clearing and you will see a path. Please be careful it can be slick.
Option 2: Waypoint "Start 2" will take you behind Independence Technology to a parking lot and trail head. The trail will take you most of the way with some trail blazing. You may encounter some brief steep terrain in some spots. Long pants are advised.
Please be sure to look around and enjoy the beauty of the Blue Hole, Hemlock Woods, and Hemlock Creek.
