Oh, Mojave! The little town that is being bypassed by a new highway 58. So much history began, passed through and ended here.
A perfect place for a cache.
In our lifetime, we have passed through Mojave on the way to the Sierras to camp and fish, visiting Grandma in Bishop, skiing in Mammoth and Lake Tahoe, riding dirtbikes in Jawbone, Randsburg, California City, visiting gold and silve r mines throughout the Owens Valley and Nevada. We even used to take the long way home from Bonneville after Speedweek. We've seen the Space Shuttle land, and raced a land speed car at Muroc Dry Lake near Edwards Air Base.
Mojave is home to "Space Ship One", the first privately built spacecraft that made a historic flight in 2004. It is also home to the "Voyager", the aircraft that made the non-stop trip around the world in 9 days in 1986.
Mining and transportation have played key roles in Mojave's history.
The discovery of Borax, gold and silver in and around the Owens Valley and the need for the transcontinental railroad project to be completed, spawned the town of Mojave.
Borax from Searles Lake, gold from Bodie and the Mono Lake area, silver from the Cosos and the Cerro Gordo Mine, to name a few, were brought to Mojave by mule team drawn freight wagons and steam ships. They were then taken to Los Angeles by railcar.
Mojave served as headquarters for construction of the L.A. Aqueduct. Read about some of Mojave's history here (visit link)
