How important is a name? To some people it is very important. It is
so important that in 1995 the Fresno Air Terminal (FAT) changed its
name to the slimmer Fresno-Yosemite International (FYI) airport.
The official reasoning behind the name change was to attract
travelers that were not familiar with the area to land at this
airport when visiting Yosemite National Park. Changing the
“FAT” airport code to “FYI” was just an
added bonus. Well, it has been almost 11 years and we still are
getting a “FAT” tag on our checked-in luggage.
Here are some facts about our slimmer FYI:
• Airport covers 2,300 acres • 1.18 million passengers
traveled through FYI in 2005.
• FAT was the first airport in the country to implement an
anti-terrorist facial recognition system, shortly after the
September 11th, 2001 attack.
• The Category IIIB Landing System is one of the most
sophisticated in the nation, necessary when navigating through the
Valley's winter tule fog.
• The vast majority of air traffic in and out of the airport
is private aircraft. Only 7% of the air traffic is commercial, 6%
is military, and the remainder is private.
