Geocache Description:

This quarter of a mile walk will take you to the places of my youth. The terrain varies from tarmac to narrow path that can be over grown, and includes a small, but substantial uphill section. It is not suitable for buggies

The short walk will take you past the “Needle’s Eye” a natural rock formation on the sea shore. The arch is accessible during low tide. The Needle’s Eye structure is made of metamorphic rock of Cambrian age. These rocks were originally sediments deposited in an ocean, around 600million years ago and one interesting feature of them is, despite their long geological history, you can still see relicts of some of the original sedimentary structures in them. As you continue you will pass Tarlair Open Air Swimming Pool, now sadly in a state of neglect. It was first opened in the 1930’s, built in the Art Deco style, though modified over the years. It was closed in 1996. In subsequent years there have been open air concerts held there. At present the only users are the Macduff Model Boat Club, who use the pool every Sunday and a Wednesday evening during the summer months. Before the introduction of indoor pool at Banff this was the place to be during the summer months. Imagine the sound of laughter, water splashing, the care free screams of children in high spirits, and the sight of hundreds of people lounging lazily, brave souls jumping off the diving boards, children running about and the paddle boats churning the water as they sped along……. Ahh glory days! When you are passed the uphill section you will be greeted with Wonderful views of the Moray Firth Coast. If you are luck or have time you could spend time trying to spot the Moray Firth Dolphins and Porpoise. A WORD OF WARNING. To reach the cache location there is a right of way across a section of the Royal Tarlair Golf Course. Please check that you do not interrupt play or place your self in danger of getting hurt! Finally you will reach a beautiful sandy beach, 1 of the 7 Salmon Howie’s. If you do this cache during the summer months I would highly recommend taking a picnic and swimming attire. The cache is not far
