INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #531

”So Blue Without You"

Thanks to IndyMagicMan for pointing me to this gem of an urban cemetery.  Unlike most urban ISQ hides, this one is a "regular" sized cache (and not in one of IMM's god-forbidden shelters either ).

Welcome to the McVey Cemetery in Warren Township, Marion County (Indianapolis) Indiana.  This is a mid 1800's cemetery that is located just off of I-465 and US 40 (The Old National Road). The site is surrounded by woods on two sides but has a residence to the immediate east.  Please be respectful of the homeowners.  Parking is extremely limited so please do a drive by before stopping (although there is very little traffic here).  Most of the grave markers have disappeared but some of the important ones have survived unscathed.

Pictured is the grave marker of John McVey.

The following information comes directly form www.staleyhistory.com:

"John McVey, the youngest son of James and Mary M. McVey had moved to Union County, Indiana, as early as 1818. From there he moved eastward to Hancock County where he purchased land in 1825. Six years later he bought approximately 900 acres of land from the government in Marion County, a portion of which he farmed until his death in 1853.

John McVey persuaded his brothers-in-law Abraham Staley and James Griggs and his nephew Isaac Staley to move to the slow-rolling hills of central Indiana. The area was well suited to farming and the thought of working the inexpensive, fertile land in an area untroubled by the increasingly volatile issue of slavery must have been appealing to those who had spent their lives plowing the steep hills and nearly worn-out soils of southwestern Virginia.

Thomas, the eldest son of John McVey, bought land from the government in Marion County in 1834. On January 12, 1838, he sold 20 acres of "W½, SW¼ of Section 7, Township 15, Range 5" (in Warren Township - adjacent to this cemetery) to his uncle, Abraham Staley. The cost to Abraham was thirty dollars."

Pictured is the grave marker of Elizabeth "Furgason".  Note the difference in spelling of "Furgason" and "Ferguson".

From Blue Family 5th Edition:  "Elizabeth was born in Virginia, most likely Hampshire Co. (now West Virginia), and Samuel was born in Lancaster Co. PA.  Samuel and Elizabeth were married in Nelson County at Bardstown.   Samuel was a son of Thomas and Elizabeth FERGUSON.  During the early years of their marriage they lived at Bardstown in Nelson Co.  They moved from Nelson Co. to Butler Co. OH ca1798, before the birth of their son, Samuel.  Elizabeth FERGUSON took her children to Marion Co. IN ca1820.  She lived there with her son James until her death.  She is buried there at McVey Cemetery in Warren Twp. just off the old National Road (US40).  Samuel was a soldier during the Revolutionary War, serving as a private in Capt. Samuel CUNNINGHAM’s Co., 2nd Bat., Washington Co. PA Militia.  He died at Hamilton, Butler Co. OH. "

LOGS INDICATING NIGHT CACHING WILL BE DELETED WITHOUT WARNING.

The cache container is a large-plastic peanut butter jar labeled as a geocache. Please leave it at least as well concealed, if not better, than you found it. If you find fallen or worn US flags at the graves of veterans, please take a moment to upright or replace them. Dispose of worn US flags in a respectable manner.    If you find the coordinates to be a little off, do not hesitate to post a waypoint with your log.  As always, be respectful, and cache in, trash out. God Bless our troops in harm's way.
