Magical History Tour - Thornhill Multi-Cache
Magical History Tour - Thornhill
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
All waypoints are within walking distance. It should take about 45 minutes to an hour to complete if all answers are correct. The cache is a camouflage tape covered cylindrical container.
This is a 6 part multi-cache with clues to solve along the way. It has 5 preliminary stages plus a final stage where the cache is hidden. At each of the preliminary stages there is information relating to the history of the local area. Below is a list of questions to be answered at each of these stages. The correct answers provide coords to the next stage and part of the coords for the final. Once all 5 preliminary stages have been visited and questions answered correctly you will have the complete coords for the final.
All stages are within walking distance so park the car closest to the posted coords which is stage 1. There is a car park very close.
It is strongly advised that you take a calculator with you because there will be some good old fashioned (it is a history cache after all) basic math questions and precision will save you time and frustration. Read the questions carefully and check and double check your answers before moving on to the next stage.
N43° and W079° are assumed.
All numbers are to be read from left to right e.g, the first digit of ‘1987’ is ‘1’, the last digit is ‘7’ and the second last (or third) digit is ‘8’.
Have fun and good luck.
STAGE 1:
Coords to Stage 2:
1) What year did Benjamin Thorne build a flour mill, tannery and store?
2) How many residents where there in 1867?
3) Add the answers from 1) and 2) and divide by 100.
4) Add the answer from 3) to +23.632 for N coords and to -0.066 for W coords.
Partial coords to Final:
N43°xa.xxx W079°bx.xxx
N: Use last digit of year from 1) for ‘a’
W: Use second last digit of year from 1) for ‘b’
STAGE 2:
Coords to Stage 3:
1) What was the total square footage of the plots?
2) Divide the answer into 938,707.2 for N coords and into 486,489.6 for W coords.
Partial coords to Final:
N43°ax.xxx W079°xx.bxx
N: Double the cost per plot for ‘a’.
W: The second last digit of the year the road was paved for ‘b’.
STAGE 3:
Coords to Stage 4:
1) How old was he when he died?
2) Divide answer into 2,890.292 for N coords and into 1,503.615 for W coords.
Partial coords to Final:
N43°xx.axx W079°xx.xxb
N: Use first digit of the day the flag was removed for ‘a’.
W: The first digit of the answer to 1) immediately above for ‘b’.
STAGE 4:
Coords to Stage 5:
1) How many where there in the family?
2) Subtract the answer from year the second skating rink was built and divide by 100.
3) Add this answer to 30.151 for N coords and to 6.639 for W coords.
Partial coords to Final:
N43°xx.xxa W079°xb.xxx
N: Double the number of prime ministers and subtract from the number of times a compass point is mentioned for 'a' - hint: don't include the direction of the slope.
W: Add the first digit to the last digit of the year the epidemics were at their worst for ‘b’.
STAGE 5:
Partial coords to Final:
N43°xx.xax W079°xx.xbx
N: Subtract the 1st digit of house number from the last digit of house number and divide by 2 for 'a'.
W: Add 1st digit to 3rd digit of approximate year built for 'b'.
Off you go, hopefully, to the final stage and the cache.
