Geocache Description:

A simple cache in a quiet valley - a good excuse for a scenic drive or ride. Take a picnic on a nice day!

Barbondale connects the Lune valley near Kirkby Lonsdale with Dentdale, in effect by-passing Sedbergh. It is a quiet backwater most of the time. On sunny days there can be several discerning picnickers who have shunned the mayhem of Devil’s Bridge for the peace of this delightful valley. There are many places to pull over and grassy banks abound where you can sit alongside the beck as it gurgles its way down to join the River Lune.

Occasionally a biker or two will zoom up the road, and in early summer the quaint village of Barbon plays host to one stage of the British Hill Climb Championships. Earnest cyclists will sometimes pant their way up to the col before plunging into Dentdale. Various walks can be started from the area and all the hills are generally quiet.

Children will find lots of fun in the beck and pools. At cooler times of the year, the peace and tranquillity may be more apparent and the scenery is wonderful whatever the weather.

The cache is very close to the road and overlooks a good picnic spot and pool to paddle in. The best spots are mostly down valley from here (not too much scope further up the road).

Caution: The cache is located on a steep bank – take care, especially if the grass is damp. (Hence the 2 for Terrain.)
