Geocache Description:

This circular walk of less than 2½ miles consists of three virtual caches which will lead to the regular cache, which is a 670 ml plastic container.

The walk starts in Dinas Powys and will take you via a residential area and golf course through Cwm George, a deep limestone gorge which runs from north to south in Cwm George Woods. Like many other areas in Wales, this place contains traces of (early) Medieval settlements. To the east, Cwm George is bordered by a high hill on top of which there is an Iron Age Hill fort and to the west you can find high cliffs.
If you are interested in castles, you can make a detour between the parking area and VC1 to visit the remains of Dinas Powys castle (coordinates: N51° 26.365 W 003° 13.395). A couple of walls are all that is left of this old Norman building, which probably stems from the 12th century. The site is overgrown with brambles and has some steep drops, so be careful with small children and dogs. The castle is located on top of a hill and can be reached via a steep path leading up to it from Lettons Way (N51° 26.189 W 003° 13.168). This path can be muddy and slippery.

Limited parking is available near N 51° 26.217 W 003° 13.071
Look for a map which describes walks around Wenvoe. This map is licensed with number LA xxxyyy.

VC1: N51° 26.(xxx + 16) W 003° 13.(yyy + 42)
What was the former name of this building, inscribed in stone (4 words)? Convert the letters of the second word into numbers using the keypad of your mobile phone: A=2 etc. Use the numbers for the following calculations:
a = sixth number minus third number
b = fourth number
c = first number minus second number
d = eighth number minus fifth number
e = third number plus tenth number
f = third number

Please note that there is an official and clearly marked footpath on the golf course and that dogs must be kept on a lead at all times.

VC2: N 51° 26.abc W 003° 13.def
In whose memory has this object been placed? Convert the letters of the surname into numbers using the keypad of your mobile phone.
g = first number times second number
h = fifth number plus sixth number minus fourth number
i = third number

To help you choose the right direction, we have provided an intermediate waypoint: N51° 26.d(e-f)e W003° 13.di(g-h).

On your way to VC3 you can see many paths to your right which lead to the top of the hill, where you can find the Iron Age Hill fort.

VC3: N 51° 26.gch W 003° 13.hbi
GPS reception may be inhibited at VC3. Look around for a sign which tells you that it is forbidden to light fires. What else does it tell you (3 words)?
Convert the second word into numbers using the keypad of your mobile phone.
j = second number plus third number
k = fourth number
l = fifth number minus sixth number
m = fifth minus fourth number

RC4: N 51° 26.jam W 003° 13.kla
The final cache.
On one of our exploratory walks there were hundreds of dragonflies near the cache site. This area can be very busy at times, so please be very careful when you retrieve the cache and make sure you hide it in the same way as you found it.
From the cache there is a linear route back to the car park.

It is possible to combine this walk with ‘Lost for Woods’, one of our other caches. There are many paths leading up to that cache, but remember that both walks will then be more strenuous as this will add to the ascent.
