Geocache Description:

CITO & trail clearing on Maclellan Island

THANK YOU EVERYONE! What a great day! We WILL do it again next year!

Ready for an event that is truly 'off the beaten path' ??
The Chattanooga Audubon Acres has always been very friendly and receptive to geocaching and we have hosted educational events, CITO work-days and other good times on their East Brainerd facility many times. Now its time to extend the favor to another of their properties, Maclellan Island, in 'downtown Chattanooga', in the middle of the Tennessee River. (The Veteran's Bridge crosses over the Island.) This will be a great opportunity to see a unique area that is not generally available to the public, except by permission and with boat access.
(Yes, of COURSE there will be caches to hunt on the Island, the Chattanooga Audubon Society has granted permission for several permanent caches to be placed on the Island! Details and posting will follow closer to the event.)

We will meet at the Chattanooga Ducks parking lot at 9:45 am. Please note that we MUST have an exact count by at least 3 days prior; no last-minute walk-ups! The Ducks are graciously providing free transport to and from the Island.

We will spend up to 4 hours on the Island gathering up trash (mostly along the edges where it washes up or is left by visiting fisherfolks), trimming trails, doing a little carpentry to repair some boards and add no-skid strips to the dock, building a firewood rack at the campground, etc. Please bring gloves, and we recommend long-pants and long-sleeves.

In case you didn't know, Maclellan Island is home to a range of protected flora and fauna, including river otter, muskrats, blue heron, peregrine falcons and more. You may want to bring a camera!
