Geocache Description:

You might enjoy some refreshing water at these little known Springs located in a CCFP near Winnetka, Illinois.

The ‘Could Be, Might Be’ series hopes to entertain and, perhaps, enlighten you. The locales you’ll visit could be historically, geographically or environmentally significant – or not. After hunting the cache – you decide!

A spring is a point where groundwater flows out of the ground, and is thus where the aquifer surface meets the ground surface. Dependent upon the constancy of the water source (rainfall or snowmelt that infiltrates the earth), a spring may be ephemeral (intermittent), or perennial (continuous).

These springs near Winnetka Illinois might have gone unnoticed except for the CCC which, in the 1930’s, had one of its many encampments nearby. When workers found this spot, they were amazed not only at the springs’ origins but readily consumed as much clean, clear tasty water as they could.

Currently, it seems to be mainly ignored by the locals –who prefer to pay top dollar for their commercially ‘Bottled (often just filtered Municipal) Water’. Categorized a magnitude 8 spring, you might be able to enjoy a cool drink here – depending on the reliability of the water source. I’ve left behind a small cup which could be used to enjoy a drink – please rinse it out before and after using it. Tread carefully when searching for the 2” diameter by 4” high cache container near the springs - and watch out for the animals which haven’t forgotten about this unique spot!
