Geocache Description:

By the side of footpath with nice views over the river Orwell.

Picturesque location on the river Orwell.
Parking is available at the marina at N52'00.344 E001'11.786.
After parking, the folly on the left is the Cat House. The story goes that in the old days this part of the coast was ideal smuggling territory. The incumbent of the house was a Ms Margaret Catchpole who fell in love with a smuggler and used to keep an eye out for the Revenue Inspectors (Customs). If the coast was clear she would place a large china cat in her window where it was visible from the water. The smugglers knew if the cat was absent not to land with their goods.
Eventually the men from the Revenue department twigged on to this scheme and Ms Catchpole was send to Australia (as was the fashion in those days). She subsequently married the British Governor-General in Australia! If you look carefully, you can still see the cat in the window.
After finding the cache, why not continue on to the Butt & Oyster for a drink and snack. The place is full of character and our dogs love playing in the stream there.
