How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

The last sunday in October marks the end of Daylight Savings Time. The clocks Fall Back, and that means only one thing to a night cacher - an extra hour of caching.

October 29th is the last sunday in October. This is the last day in Daylight Savings time. At 2:00, we'll all move our clocks back by one hour. This means that 2:00AM will actually occur twice in one night. This event cache takes place on the night of the changeover - we start SATURDAY night, and finish sometime in the early morning hours on Sunday. Some of us will actually be out caching as the time change occurs!

The end of Daylight Savings means the start of Winter. This is a time when many geocachers simply hang up the GPS until the warmer weather returns. Then there are those of us that keep on caching right through the winter, noting the complete absence of any bugs - and the well reduced muggle population.

Days are short in winter, and that can cut into your geocaching time, unless you are willing to go caching at night.

This cache can serve as a place to talk about night caching, meet some of the veterans at this - and introduce some new people to the joys of caching after the sun goes down. Have you ever noticed how easy it is to spot camo-tape in the beam of a very bright flashlight?

We'll start with an evening of camraderie with our fellow geocachers at the Olde Dicken's Pub in downtown Milton at 6:30. We'll be in the upstairs portion of the pub. The pub is kid-friendly.

The Order of the BFL is diligently working on a series of night caches to be made available at the pub, as the second part of this event cache. More details will follow once we're ready to reveal them... (hint: bring your flashlights and BFLs)

BFL Boot Camp

The night caching portion of the event is optional, but highly encouraged. The caches have been placed, and the information is being provided at the pub. All the caches will be required to find the Order of the BFL at "The Tree".

The caches will be permanent, and are part of a new series called BFL Boot Camp. We will keep the starting locations secret until the night of the event cache.

Communications

During the pub portion, the most probable form of communicating with each other will probably be across the table, or in a pinch - shouting across the room.

For the night caching portion of the event, however, it this will not suffice. It is highly recommended you bring an FRS (or GMRS) radio and tune it to Channel 2 (turn off any encryption or privacy features too!). This is the official geocaching channel and will be used for announcements to the groups, and may even be used to talk to one of the organizers.

We will also have several HAM Radio operators at this event, and we will be monitoring the local repeater. If you cannot reach somebody via FRS, ask to have your message relayed by one of the HAM Operators, as our radios have considerably more reach than the FRS radios.

The Amateur Radio operators that are helping with this event are:
  • northernpenguin - VA3GDP
  • Keith Watson - VA3UPL
  • chris-mouse - VE3VGP

  • For the HAMS: The local repeater is VE3ADT (Milton), UHF on 444.125 CTCSS is optional, and 131.8Hz. We'll most likely establish simplex on 146.580.

Local Caches

For all you day cachers out there - there are 372 caches within 20 kilometers of the event! Plenty to keep you busy during the day.
