Geocache Description:

The cache is a magnetic keyholder with a log sheet.

This cache is a tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd, one of the greatest southern rock bands playing. Near this site the plane carrying members of Lynyrd Skynyrd to a concert in Baton Rouge crashed due to engine failure on October 20, 1977. Killed in the crash were lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, his sister and back-up singer Cassie Gaines, road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary, and co-pilot William Gray. Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of the pioneers in southern rock, forming in the late Sixties and early Seventies in Jacksonville, Florida. They gained popularity with the songs “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Freebird” and released the Street Survivors album three days before the crash, which showed the band standing in the middle of flames. The album was changed to remove the flames, but some original covers still exist. After the crash surviving members of the band did several solo projects but reunited in 1987 to do a tribute tour with former member Ed King on bass and Ronnie Van Zant’s younger brother, Johnny, on vocals. This was to be a one time tour but in 1991 they started touring again and recorded a new album. The tour opened in Baton Rouge and I was fortunate enough to attend that concert. They have changed the lineup since then with several other veteran southern rockers rotating in and out, including members of the Charlie Daniels Band and the Outlaws, and the music is still great. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2006. Freebird is one of the signature songs of the band and was originally wrote as a tribute to Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers Band. Since the crash it has been played as a tribute to Ronnie Van Zant and other members at the concerts. On October 20, 2019, a monument was dedicated on Easley Road Near the crash site. I have posted coordinates on this page. I am leaving this cache here because it is closer to the crash site but if you are a Skynyrd fan you should visit the site of the marker. I will post pictures here also.
