In April 2002, the running club Pittsburgh Hash House Harriers
hosted a Red Dress Run in which 50 runners wearing red dresses ran
across nearby townships. At one of the beverage breaks, a picture
was taken of the crowd overlooking the river and downtown on the
horizon, and years later, the picture was displayed at the annual
Lawrenceville Art All
Night.
Cache is located near the location where that picture was taken.
It's a large ammo box with a dress, hat, purse (leave those in the
cache), and several children books (those you can take). The
container is big, so think about placing a large object for an
exchange.
Cache once had a disposable camera that was used by finders to
snap a picture of themselves wearing the dress, and whose pictures
were exhibited at Art All Night event in April 2007, during which
the cache was disabled for 24 hours and physically displayed the
cache, along with its contents, logbook, and prints from the
disposable camera. In a way, this cache was an art-in-progress
project. The medium was provided, and finders make the art. The
logbook is the size of a small book. Draw a figure or landscape.
Crayons provided.
There is no camera in the cache anymore. It has been used
and developed. Please bring your own camera and upload any images
you take.
There are two ways to get to cache location, one short and one
long. The long is more interesting: ample parking can be found at
the auto parts shopping center store in Etna very close to Route 8
at 40 30.066N 79 56.635W. Then, walk across Route 8 at nearby
traffic light, and reach end of a short road on other side, where a
steep trail leads into the wooded hill at 40 30.171N 79 56.683W.
After climbing hill somewhat, trail intersects a bigger trail at a
T intersection at 40 30.195N 79 56.629N. Turn right in the slighly
descending trail and stay on it for aprox half mile until proximity
of cache location. Trail has tall grasses and weeds, and steep
sides. As you approach the cache, you may find yourself on a
terrace overlooking other terraces sloped below. A wide terrace
with traces of fireplace is at altitude of 293 meters, and
positioned to 20 meters from the cache. That is the wrong terrace,
and you'll have to find your way on how to get to the lower terrace
on which the cache is located, at altitude of 289 meters. No
climbing is required to descend or ascend to the cache location,
and a wide walkable path exists to reach the cache location.
Nonetheless, exercise caution and be vigilant of where you step and
where you walk.
Cache location is a hangout area of local youth. Use usual
precautions in not leaving traces that could indicate location of
the hide, and make sure you totally cover the hide. The previous
cache has been muggled in summer 2010 with all contents lost, and
we don't want this to be a repeat event.
On Friday July 25, 2008, the Pittsburgh Hash House Harriers hosted a hare and hounds
style run in the Strip District and surrounding area, with runners
wearing red dresses, and proceeds of a $11 donation went to the
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
On Friday Sept 11, 2009, the Pittsburgh Hash House Harriershosted a hare and hounds
style run in Mount Washington and surrounding area, with runners
wearing red dresses, and proceeds given to the Leukemia and
Lymphoma Society.
