On April 21 ,1976 ,a well organised gang fled with a haul of money estimated between $6 and $12 million dollars from an elaborate heist at The Victoria Club. The money was never recovered but believed hidden in Melbourne somewhere ,in a secret cache.New information could lead to the recovery of the stash.
An elaborate plan at the Queen St building after the Easter Racing Carnival saw the gang burst into the vacant settling room of the bookies, take only 11 mins to raid the cash boxes and flee. Their clever plan saw them rent offices two floors above, weeks earlier, as they pretented to be business operators .They cut all phone lines and disabled the elevators just prior to the raid. All money was raced two floors up,hidden in their offices and they walked out and then a smart plan of a noisy white car speeding from the scene had police on a wild goose chase across Melbourne for days .Meanwhile the bandits returned to their offices a few weeks later and calmly walked away with the proceeds .
Five of the six gang members were gunned down by 1983 and Prendergast went missing in 1985 and has never been found.
As no-one has been convicted over this crime ,technically it is still classified as unsolved and the missing money and goods never found!
Leaked information in the form of possible hidden stash co-ordinates have come to light but it is believed to be well hidden ,even fooling police.
The hidden cache is a 2 litre sistema container "extremely well camouflaged " into its surroundings. It contains a log book and pen in a zip-lock bag within a large money bag! Also within the stash is believed to be pearls, jewellery, many goods and all that cash !!
Good luck in your search for the huge haul missing since 1976 !!
