A regular cache (ammo box) that should be easy to find after a
short hike through the area trails. This is a great area to observe
many different types of wildlife with the kids.
You can pull to the side of the road with plenty of room at the
following coordinates N 44° 09.698’ W078° 58.326’. This
area of the road is a T-junction of Cragg Rd. and Old Simcoe
Rd.
My son and I discovered this area shortly after we moved to Port
Perry and were out looking for hiking trails.
The Nonquon Provincial Wildlife Area is crown land just north of
the Victorian town of Port Perry. It is not a wildlife preserve or
sanctuary but it is an area set aside to protect wildlife that
cannot be hunted. The wildlife area protects reptiles, amphibians,
birds and fish.
The Nonquon Provincial Wildlife Area is about 1100 hectares. 100
hectares is in use for educational purposes only. The rest of the
area can be used by anyone. You will notice that the south side of
the main trail is environmentally protected land, while the main
trail and north is open use, including hunting.
The land use includes hunting, fishing, trapping, hiking, bird
watching, horseback riding and camping. It is a class 1 wetland and
is an area of natural scientific interest. The signs at the various
entrances say things like "this is your land - use it and enjoy
it". During hunting season use common sense and wear appropriate
blaze orange attire if you are hiking the main trail to the
north.
Once you’ve parked the car, enter the trail head with clearly
marked signage and head due east. About a tenth of a kilometer into
the trail you’ll approach a junction where the trail can
continue north into the bush, east through the marsh, or south into
the environmentally protected lands. Take the trail to the right
heading south.
As you head south, you will approach a partially covered wooden
foot bridge. Do not cross this. At this point, you are within 30
feet of the cache. The cache itself is well sheltered and should
stay covered in green foliage year round. As you search, if you
cross any of the marshy water, you’re getting colder and
probably wetter.
We've placed one of our son's first travel bugs TY Peace TB in the
cache to begin it's journey spreading Peace around the world. There
is also a first to find prize with the log book.
