According to the Cass County Historical Society, this is the site
of a battle fought on August 7, 1791, on order from Washington DC
to scatter the native Miami tribes. General John Wilkinson led 525
Kentucky troops against the vaillage of Olde Towne. In the battle,
six warriors, two women and a child were killed. Two of Wilkinson's
men also died at the battle. Today the site of Olde Towne is just
northeast of Adamsboro on the Eel River. (MONEY IN OLDE TOWNE) It
is also said that in the 1700's a courier from Montreal named
Father Cardon, with four soldiers and four Indian guides were to
transport $10,000.00 as a pay off to the Indians near St. Louis, a
1300 mile trip. Along the way, the soldiers allegedly developed a
scheme to take the money. Their plan was to kill the Father and
split the money. With no settlement in the area a murder and escape
would be feasible. Father Cardon however uncovered the plot near
Olde Towne. He buried the money in a pot near the mouth of the
Twelve Mile Creek, on the north bank of the Eel River. Now the
soldiers need him alive until he provided them with the location of
the money. He kept an accurate description of the place, intending
to retrieve the money later. Unfortunately, the Father took sick
and returned to Montreal and later to Europe, never to return to
Olde Towne again.
