Smuggler's Run - West Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

CTYankee9: Too many of the segments keep going missing, too bad this was actually a pretty good run in either rain or sunshine.

Geocache Description:

Route includes paved roads, unimproved roads, horse trails, and footpaths. Roughly a 6 mile round-trip.

Parking can be had at Border Field State Park, the entrance gates to Border Field State Park, or the corrals past the entrance at the far west end of Monument Road for the starting point. At the final cache; there is parking available at the Parks & Recreation building on Hollister Street, near the bridges or the corrals at the trail-head for this area, a few hundred feet west of the Parks & Recreation building {approx. 1/2 mile from the End Point}. Recommended to have someone pick you up here or leave a drop car at this location if you don't want to do the round-trip length. Also you can take the paved roads back to Border Field State Park for an easy, but longer ride. You will be crossing land belonging to the State parks as well as the County parks; Border Field State Park is officially only open on the weekends from 9AM to sunset, County property is useable 24/7. Please bring a friend along as this route is kinda long and secluded. If you are new to this area; this route in conjuction with the other caches here will make for a nice round-about trip, picking-up numerous caches along the way!

Each cache along the route will be a small candy tube or hockey puck container, cammo'd to approximate it's surroundings. The final cache is an ammo can. There is no need to bushwack on this trip, each and every cache is located within 25' of the intended trail. The final cache site will give you an elevated view of the surrounding TJ River area.

This multi-cache route is a sometimes used smuggling route through this area, although not as heavily used as it used to be. There will be variuos physical caches along the route as well as waypoints to keep you on track as you pass through and over the TJ River. During the river crossing stage; you are actually traversing over an area that the TJ River passes below ground, although after a rain this area may become mud logged due to the river seeping back up through the ground. The waypoints are provided to make the crossing a little easier; you are welcome to not use them to make the trip a little more adventurous! Even during the summer months these trails can be tough for bikes, very powdery and soft talc-like sand from the horses that use these trails. Last thing for the river crossing portion; the trail is mostly flat, but there are obstacles, fallen trees, overhanging trees, rocks, narrow portions, ruts, etc, but I have seen up to horses using this trail easily.
