A short walk in the woods on dirt or grass paths. Cache is close to the path.
This cache is located close to the boundary between Old Sneyd Park Nature Reserve and Bishop's Knoll.
Originally this area would have been swamp land on the edge of the River Avon. The Romans had a road running close by which connected Bath to the nearby port of Sea Mills. After their demise the area came under the Bishop of Worcester's lands and the entry in the Doomsday Book reads Stocke, Bishop of Worcester hence the name Stoke Bishop. Sneyd means land set apart from the surrounding area and in 1274 Sneyd Park was set aside from Stoke Bishop as a deer park. The spelling has changed over the years from Snead to Sneed and today's Sneyd. In the 17th century the Jackson Mansion was built here where Glenavon Park is today.
The Old Sneyd Park Nature Reserve is a small area that was denied planning permission in the 1970's and ceded to Bristol City Council for use as a public open space in 1988.
Bishop's Knoll is managed by the Woodland Trust and includes some very ancient trees as well as more recent planting.
We would suggest parking in Glenavon Park to approach from the Old Sneyd Park Nature Reserve...51 28.6891N, 2 38.5606W
Or in Bramble Lane to enter through Bishop's Knoll....51 28.450N, 2 38.5785W
We would not recommend approaching from the A4 (Portway) as this is a busy road with no parking and a railway line to cross. Please note that the yahoo map places this cache to the West of the railway line but it is actually to the East.
GPS cover can be poor because of the trees but there are more open areas to get a fix.
The cache is a Tupperware type box and contains a log book, Lego, pack of cards, geocache badge, geocache wristband, various coins and banknotes including a Guernsey double, number puzzle, yoyo, 4 plastic figures, 3 gemstones, key ring puzzle, maze puzzle, bouncy ball and a small prize for FTF. Happy hunting!
