Geocache Description:

This one should not be too hard to find. Lock-N-Lock not too far in the woods. This church is still very active so be respectful.

Kingston is the oldest Protestant community in Mississippi. Once known as Jersey Town, the early settlers came from New Jersey and The Congregational Church was organized here in 1798. Tobias Gibson organized a Methodist congregation here in 1800, the second Methodist church in the state. It is said that in 1803 Lorenzo Dow, eccentric Methodist missionary, sold his watch in order to buy the property for the church which was not far from the present location. In 1822 a second building was realized only to be damaged by a tornado in 1840. The present lot was given in 1856 by Alexander King Farrar and his wife, Ann Doughtery. Slaves, who attended the same church as the whites, used a gallery which still exists in the church. Services are still held at Kingston, as they have been since Reconstruction.
