After years of
fund-raising, designing, and checking all the boxes with
city-planners, all those who served with aviation patrol squadrons
at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station now have a memorial.
This memorial is
dedicated to all the
United
States
personnel who
served in the Navy Patrol Squadrons based at NAS Whidbey Island and
to the many Whidbey Airmen who lost their lives in VP
operations.
Over 60 patrol
squadrons have been based at Whidbey Island Naval Air
Station. The
P-2V
Neptune
was chosen to
represent all Whidbey-based patrol squadrons as these venerable
aircraft operated from Whidbey base runways continuously from 1948
to 1973, over 25 years. From the
Aleutians
and
northern
Japan
operations of
WWII, through
Korea
,
Vietnam
and Cold War
missions, to the present in
Afghanistan
and
Iraq
, Whidbey patrol squadron personnel have been there, doing their
part to preserve liberty for all.
Please be
