Co-ords for suggested parking only.

The Western Heights of Dover are steeped in military history with dramatic 19th century fortifications. These fortifications were started c.1750 and finished c.1867. In 1999 a local authority partnership installed an interpretation trail around the long demolished Grand Shaft Barracks with 10 history boards reciting the barracks history. The trail is a little under a mile long and the boards, although numbered 1-10, need no exact route to enjoy.

The departure of the 1st Btn Parachute Regt in early 2006 supposedly ended over 900 years of recorded military presence in Dover. However, in a brave rearguard action, a small number of soldiers have remained behind and concealed themselves in the remains of the former Grand Shaft Barracks.
