DEDICATED TO MY MENTOR LAMAR HAINES Ammo can in next to a rock covered with sticks. Stealth required if the trail is busy!
Take a Hike Veit Springs is the sixth of a series of caches in Northern Arizona. It is located on the San Francisco Peaks inside the Lamar Haines Wildlife Area, in the Coconino National Forest and is accessible on maintained roads to the trail head. There are trail guides on Trails.com, Flagstaff Hikes by Richard & Sherry Mangum and Best Hikes with Children by Lawrence Latham.
This is a great hike for children and kids of all ages particularly in the fall when the leaves are changing. Pass through the gate and bear right at the sign up the hill. This will put you on an old road which takes you through stands of aspens, pines and open meadows. Ludwig Veit homesteaded this area in 1892 by developing the spring and building a small cabin. Go all the way to the cabin, which was cut down in height to stop vandalism and look on the rock to the right of the cabin and you can see where he chiseled his name. Head up the hill to the spring house and the spring with a wood door in the cliff face to protect the water from wildlife. Continue along the left face of the cliff to Canadian spring and view some pictographs on the walls, remember look don’t touch.
Please take the time to visit the plaque honoring Lamar Haines just off the trail. Lamar was my teacher, coach and a close family friend while I was growing up in Flagstaff. There are folks all over that learned their outdoor skills from him especially campfire cooking in Dutch Ovens.
So grab some water, a picnic lunch and hit the trail.
