How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

This cache will require brains and brawn to execute, but you will find it very rewarding. I promise. The steps to follow are:

1. Solve the ‘easy’ Sudoku puzzle below.

2. Bring the completed puzzle to the co-ordinates posted above.

3. Use the completed puzzle and the additional information you will find in a duct tape-wrapped peanut butter container strapped to an evergreen tree to determine the coordinates of the final cache.

Some consider geocaching to be ‘geeky’. More consider Sudoku to be ‘geeky’. Perhaps that’s what makes it such a natural combination.

The hike to the final cache coordinates is not long, but does require a tricky, lung-busting climb. There is a trail, but loose rock degrades the footing in places. THIS CACHE SHOULD ONLY BE ATTEMPTED DURING GOOD WEATHER – NEVER IN ICY, WINDY, OR WET CONDITIONS!! No special climbing gear is required, but please be cautious and do not take young children with you.

What is Sudoku, you ask? It is a nine-by-nine array comprised of single digit numbers. Solve the puzzle by entering the digits from 1 to 9 into the blank spaces. Every row must contain one of each digit. So must every column, as must every 3x3 square. I have completed exactly 1 Sudoku puzzle in my lifetime – the one you see below. It is rated as ‘easy’, but if you are a first-timer like me, it will probably be challenging enough (took me about 45 minutes).

My promise to you is that you will be well-rewarded for completing this cache. Bring a camera and allow for a few extra minutes to enjoy the view.
