INDIANA
SPIRIT QUEST #532
”Mistaken or
Misleading?"
Thanks to BlackJeepSquadron for pointing me to this gem of a
cemetery. Welcome to the Boone-Hutchinson Cemetery in
Washington Township, Putnam County, Indiana. Most of this cemetery
is fairly modern as it is still active. The western most section is
the oldest with burrials dating back to 1822.

Pictured is a monument identifying the area of the old Boone
family graves.
From the drive this monument appears to be sloppy
pile of rock, but as you can see from the front is a much
more deliberate monument. This area is alleged to contain the
oldest graves of the Boone family. After 2 days of
investigating this claim, I can only say that I believe that
those who erected this monument were sadly mistaken or were
extremely misleading in their claims.
While Susan Boone Rissler did have a brother named Daniel Boone, it
was not "the Daniel Boone" we are all familar with. The best I can
come up with is that her relationship to Daniel Boone (American
Pioneer and Trailblazer, 1734 - 1820) was grandniece. While she did
have a brother named Daniel Boone, he died in 1879 in Iowa (not in
1820 Missouri).
To further point out the misleading informaton, Phebe Rissler
Boone is indeed the wife of a Squire Boone (1794-1879 who died
again in Iowa). The Squire Boone that is refered to on the monument
as "buried in NC" (1696-1765, born in England) was the father of
the Daniel Boone we are all familar with. Phebe's relationship to
the popular Squire is wife of the great grandson of Squire Boone
(1696-1765). The Squire Boone that is well known in Indiana is
really Squire Boone Jr (Brother of Daniel Boone). Due to the
widespread use of the names Daniel and Squire throughout the Booone
lineage, sorting out relationships is complicated, not to mention
that the claims made on the monument are very decieving.

Pictured is the grave marker of William Gilmore
Not so decieving is the grave of Revolutionary War veteral William
Gilmore. He was born 1760 in Augusta Co., Virginia. Unfortunately
there is not much information available about his life or military
service othen that what is offered on his gravestone.

Nearby is also the Revolutionary War Grave of Peter McIntosh.
Again, there is very little known about this veteran of the
American Revolution other than the information on his gravestone.
LOGS
INDICATING NIGHT CACHING WILL BE DELETED WITHOUT
WARNING.
The cache container is a camoed micro
container. Please leave it at least as well concealed, if not
better, than you found it. If you find fallen or worn US flags
at the graves of veterans, please take a moment to upright or
replace them. Dispose of worn US flags in a respectable
manner. If you find the coordinates to be a
little off, do not hesitate to post a waypoint with your
log. As always, be respectful, and cache in, trash out.
God Bless our troops in harm's
way.
