Geocache Description:

A traditional cache at the top of one of Mittagong’s extinct volcanic peaks.
You can drive to within 250m of the cache.
A popular spot for active types who like a spot of bouldering with views to The Gib.

CAUTION
There are cliffs near GZ so keep a close eye on kids and dogs.

Note by 10011010, copied so it doesn't get lost.

UPDATE :: In Brief

A new logbook and container have been provided. Please replace the cache exactly the way you find it.

UPDATE :: Requisite

Somewhere on geocaching.com they suggest that neophytes should not place their own new caches until they have found at least twenty to twenty-five. We have waited until we have two-hundred and thought we'd serve our cache-placing apprenticeship by servicing caches in need of care whose owners are, for one reason or another, unable to do the job themselves or who are no longer available. Given the sorry state of the logbook and container as illustrated in Boot65's photo, and given CO rustymac has not logged into the site since 2009, we elected The Crag as one of our restoration projects. The container we've provided should weather much better than previous containers, should not break, and should keep the new logbook in good condition for years to come. We hope you enjoy the up-grade.

UPDATE :: The Essentials

This cache is not for children. Rustymac cautions to keep an eye on them. We would like to suggest you keep them at home. When we first saw the location it flickered through our mind to let this one fade into that big archive in the sky. We had no intention of being responsible for, or contributing to, anybody's precipitous demise. However, after nine years without a fatality, we had to concede that most geocachers are aware of their limitations and know how to keep themselves safe. Accordingly, we thought it would be a tragic waste to allow a cache established in 2006 to be lost for no other reason than nobody stepped up to give it a bit of well-needed maintenance. We did it here and would like to see other cachers do similar work in the case of other neglected caches.

The terrain. This cache is not difficult to get. If this cache could be reproduced in the middle of a park, the terrain rating would be 1.5 to 2.0 stars. You can certainly get it easily enough. However, as The Rats say below, "Certainly is near a cliff, I'd say on the edge." The reason for the 3.5 star rating, then, is its proximity to the cliff edge. You do not require special equipment so it would be hard to rate it higher than 3.5. That said, you should not attempt this in thongs, flip flops, or sandals, nor should you do it in the rain or after it's been raining. If you're the slightest bit timid, then there would be no shame in using a secure rope to steady your nerve. The bottom line, though, is that if you are afraid of heights, or not sure-footed, or you're not confident with your equilibrium, then please give this one a miss.

The hide. In reading through the logs we see that cachers have taken liberties with the placement of the cache. Please do not do this. By relocating the cache, you're just making it harder for the next person to find. And you expose it to muggles and increase the likelihood of it getting lost or damaged again. So, please replace the cache exactly the way you find it.

The cache has been well stocked, including one travel bug and no kid stuff.

Additional Hints

Move away from the edge to open the cache.

Watch your step, and please don't die.
