GERNICAKO ARBOLA

Sens cap dubte el símbol més universal dels bascos és l'Arbre de Gernika. Sota aquest Roure es van efectuar les primeres Juntes del Senyoriu de Biscaia i amb el temps es va convertir en el símbol del poble i de les institucions basques. En l'actualitat acull actes tan especials com la presa de possessió i el jurament del càrrec de Lehendakarí o del Diputat General.

Han estat diversos els arbres que han ocupat el lloc. Així va ser quan el 1860 es va plantar el successor del conegut com a “Arbre Vell” i que va estar al capdavant de la tribuna des d'on es juren els càrrecs fins el 2004, any en que va acabar el seu cicle vital i va haver de ser substituït.

Capricis de l'atzar van fer que un plançó centenari de l'autèntic arbre de Gernika sobrevisqui avui dia a Arenys de Munt on va arribar gràcies a les excentricitats d'un noble a finals del segle XIX.

La història comença en 1891 quan Don August Borràs-Jalpí de Mercader es va casar amb Donya Sofía de Algorta i de Albaroa, una rica dama de Lekeito, al País Basc. A partir d'aquest moment, a l'ajuntar-se les dues fortunes, Don August va donar curs a la seva fantasia i va transformar el vell casal familiar d'Arenys de Munt en un Castell Medieval.

Va fer construir un pati d'armes, torres amb merlets, una muralla amb torres de defensa, dependències diverses i un llac artificial, amb una llanxa i dues barques, a més d'un far que va haver d'apagar perquè despistava als vaixells que navegaven mar endins!.

Va omplir els seus jardins de plantes exòtiques, boscos, fonts i ponts de pedra. En aquests jardins i en homenatge a la seva dona va ser on va fer plantar un plançó de l'autèntic arbre de Gernika.

El 1980 el lloc va ser decretat com protegit i el 2004 el president del Parlament Català Ernest Benach i el president del Parlament Basc Juan Maria Atutxa van homenatjar l'arbre de Gernika català que es conserva protegit per una tanca metàl·lica on es pot llegir “Gernicako Arbola”

Actualment el Castell és un restaurant de luxe i tots els jardins, llac i far formen un gran parc públic que, entre les seves instal·lacions, té un circuit amb diferents aparells per fer esport.

Without no doubt the most universal symbol of the Basques is the Tree of Gernika. Under this oak the first Meetings of the Señorío of Biscay took place and with time it became the symbol of the town and the Basque institutions. At the present time it welcomes as special acts as the taking of possession and the oath of the position of Lehendakarí or the General Deputy.

There have been different trees that have occupied the place. Thus it was when in 1860 the successor of the well-known "Old Tree" was planted and that it remained to the front of the tribune from where the charges are sworn until 2004, year in which finished its vital cycle and had to be replaced.

The caprices of the fortune did that a centenary scion of Gernika's authentic tree survives nowadays in Arenys de Munt where it arribed thanks to the eccentricities of a nobleman at the end of the 19th century.

History begins in 1891 when Don August Borràs-Jalpí de Mercader married with Doña Sofía de Algorta i de Albarda, a rich lady of Lekeito, of the Basque Country. From this moment, on both fortunes having be joined, Don August gave free rein to their fantasy and transformed their old familiar house in Arenys de Munt into a Medieval Castle.

He made construct a court of weapon, towers with battlements, a wall with towers of defense, different dependences and an artificial lake, with a launch and two boats, in addition a marine light that he had to extinguish because it confused to the ships that were sailing of sea in.

He filled his gardens of exotic plants, forests, fountains and stone bridges. In these gardens and in honoring to his wife he made plant a scion of Gernika's authentic tree.

In 1980 the place was decreed as protected and in 2004 the president of the Catalan Parliament Ernest Benach and the president of the Parliament Vasco Juan Maria Atutxa, honoured the “Catalan Gernika tree” that remains protected by a metallic fence where it is possible to read "Gernicako Arbola".

At the moment the Castle is a luxury restaurant and all the gardens, lake and lighthouse form a great public park that, between its facilities, has a circuit with different apparatuses to make sport.
