CONTAINER REPLACED BY OWNER ON 10-10-10 -all new contents.
Geologically themed cache a few hundred feet off paved road off Interstate 80. A short uphill scramble dodging a few rocks. Cache container is a 12" X 3" diameter cylinder that should be visible peeking out from under a few rocks as you near ground zero. Easier if approached from north - it's on the side of the rocky knob AWAY from the freeway.
Learn about local geologic history when you find this cache full of geology themed items. No need to stick to the theme, but do read and enjoy the local geology lesson included in the cache container, and leave it for others. You can download and print the same geologic info at the website provided.
This cache is located by one of a few prominent knobs of dark rock just north of the Mustang Exit #23 off Interstate 80, about 10 miles east of Reno, Nevada. The rock is a remnant of a lava flow that is a product of one of the most recent volcanic events in northwestern Nevada, only about a million years old. The composition of this lava flow is basalt, like Hawaiian Island lavas, which is different from the andesitic composition of huge thicknesses of lava that erupted earlier in this region, signifying an important change in the style of tectonic activity in this area. See the nearby “McClellan Peak Basalt Flow at Mustang” EarthCache description for more detailed geologic information about the rocks here.
