Firenze. Ogni città ha il suo quartiere popolare, intendendo per tale il quartiere del proletariato e sottoproletariato urbano. San Frediano è il quartiere popolare fiorentino per eccellenza, sulla riva sud dell’Arno, in città ci sono altri quartieri che hanno connotati storico-popolari, come Santa Croce, ma questi quartieri col tempo si sono sempre più svuotati dei loro originari abitanti, allontanati in anonimi palazzoni periferici. A San Frediano invece, ma non so ancora per quanto tempo, è rimasto il tessuto popolare, ci sono ancora i negozi degli artigiani, corniciai, ceramisti, mobilieri, fabbri e la gente ancora si riconosce e si saluta per strada. Il quartiere ha avuto il suo cantore in Vasco Pratolini che con il suo romanzo “Le Ragazze di San Frediano” ha descritto il quartiere, tra cronaca e sentimento, nella vita quotidiana del dopoguerra., come altri suoi romanzi di ambientazione fiorentina, visto attraverso i sogni, le speranze, la rabbia, gli amori e le illusioni delle giovani Ragazze di San Frediano.

San Frediano is the most popular florentine borough, on the southern riverside of Arno, in the city other boroughs have historic-popular feature, like Santa Croce, but these boroughs have lost in the years their original inhabitants migrating in the outskirts in anonymous big buildings. But not in San Frediano; there you can still find, but I don’t know how long in the future, the popular background of Florence. There you can find the the shops of the craftsmen, ceramists, frames for paintings makers, furniture hand-made sellers, smiths; and the people in the streets still salute each other. The borough had its narrator in Vasco Pratolini, the florentine writer who, with his novel “The Girls of San Frediano”, described the borough day-life among chronicle and feeling, in the years after the IIWW, like other his novels of florentine ambientation, seen through the dreams, the hope, the anger, the loves and the illusions of the young Girls of San Frediano.
