Geocache Description:

Does anyone remember the last time we had breakfast in Dallas?  So far this year, we've been to The Colony a couple of times, North Richland Hills, and Ft. Worth more times than I care to count.  Well it's time to bring this baby home.  My home.  East Dallas.

Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate families and the chance to return home if only for a few days.  This part of town is where I grew up.  Words can't describe how much it's changed!  I lived about 2 blocks from McCree Park.  In the summer, we would walk to "Free Swim" from 7:00 to 9:00AM, come home and play all day, or stay there and play in the creek that runs along the back of the park, then go back again for the 3:00 to 5:00 session.  In the fall, we played football in the outfields of the baseball diamonds.  At the northeast corner of Kingsley Road and Plano Road was a farm where we would ride horses.  And I can remember when I was about 6, we would take the train from the White Rock Depot, which was located at Kingsley and Jupiter, to Chicago to see my grandparents.  We later moved to about a block from Lake Highlands Jr. High School, but alot of my friends and their families stayed here for some time.

When I got older, we used to hang out in the large White Rock Bank parking lot behind the Jack In The Box at Northwest Highway and Ferndale and listen to music until 2:00 in the morning while planning to take over the world.  As much money as I spent there, I should own the thing!  The yellow building across from the Golden Corral is where I spent every afternoon after school and Saturday mornings from the time I was 16 until I was 19 working for my best friend's father's paint and body shop detailing the repaired cars.

Where the Golden Corral and Sam's and Fry's on Northwest Highway are now, used to be the Garland Municipal Airport.  They closed it after they built DFW (as they did all the "munis" around Dallas except for Red Bird), but they left the runway which ran from Golden Coral to Fry's.  Every Friday and Saturday night, this became our drag strip; with the blessing of the cops, no less, because we weren't on the street causing trouble.  I had a 1967 Mustang fastback that my friend and I "modified".  I wasn't the fastest car around, but after I beat the 1969 Camaro "Indy Edition", they knew who I was.

Flag Pole Hill is where I learned to be both a Cub and Boy Scout.  And White Rock Lake, well, let's just say that what happens at White Rock Lake, stays at White Rock Lake.

But enough of this.  Let's all get together from 8:30 to 10:30 to celebrate Thanksgiving and the coming holiday season.  Bring some of your "growing up" stories and share them with your "Geocaching Family".  Afterwards, you can start some new memories by finding some of the caches in Lake Highlands and around White Rock Lake or head 15 minutes down the road and take advantage of the caches around Lake Ray Hubbard.

Hope to see everyone there and - HAPPY THANKSGIVING!  WELCOME HOME!

UPDATE 10/19/06 - DOOR PRIZES?  OF COURSE!  MORE INFO TO COME.

UPDATE 11/4/06 - Need ammo cans?  I got a bunch!  They are $3.50 each - 30s or 50s.  Email me or post a note and I'll bring them with me.  I've got too many to just bring all of them, so orders are preferred.

UPDATE 11/14/06 - I only have 4 of the 50s left. I still have about 50 of the 30s.

UPDATE 11/16/06 - Another small run has taken the last of the 50s. Still plenty of 30s left.

UPDATE 11/17/06 - 10:00PM. Orders for ammo cans are now closed.
