Geocache Description:

Okundekun Falls, located on the Baltimore River, is our favorite waterfall in the U.P. Yes, Taquamenon and others are larger, but Okundekun is scenic and secluded. The trail is a bit long for younger kids and some higher points along the river's edge could be dangerous for unattended children, but with supervision this area is generally kid-friendly and contains some interesting geologic features.

Make sure you allot enough time to fully enjoy Okundekun’s upper and lower falls and pay special attention to the interesting patterns carved in the exposed river bed by countless years of flowing water and sand. During your visit, look for the grottos formed by the river’s undercutting action and note the deep recess behind the main drop of the lower falls.

The cache is an ammo box located near the falls. You can reach the cache by crossing the North Country Trail bridge below the lower falls or by taking a short-cut across the river just above the falls if conditions allow. The algae on the rock can be slippery, but most times the river is docile and easy to cross. Initial contents include a 2-pack of card games, flashlight w/ batteries, modeling clay, Tonka truck on a key chain, a large Army man, wind chime, and tennis ball dog toy.

Finding Okundekun Falls is easy, but requires a walk of 45 minutes or so each way. We’re confident you’ll find that it’s worth the hike.
From Bruce Crossing, head north on Hwy 45 for just over 7 miles to the well-marked parking area on the East side of the road located at 46* 38.817N, 89* 10.548W. Follow the nicely marked and maintained trail which first takes you to Upper Okundekun Falls before continuing down to the larger lower falls. Note: Okundekun Falls is also known as Baltimore Falls and is listed this way on some maps.
