Michigan Spirit Quest #028

"Mackinac Island Post Cemetery"

WELCOME TO ONE OF MACKINAC ISLANDS CEMETERYS

Welcome to the Post Cemetery on Mackinac Island, Mackinac county, Michigan. The Post Cemetery is the final resting place of two individuals who’s path’s cross in a bad way. They are Private James Brown and Corporal Hugh Flinn.

Private James Brown was born in Philadelphia, PA and was a shoemaker there. He stood 5’ 6” and had dark hair, dark eyes and a dark complexion. He was 25 years old when he enlisted oin January 1, 1827 in Louisville, KY for 5 years with Company “G” 5th US Infantry. He deserted on September 8, 1827 and was apprehended on October 8, 1827. While he was in confinement at Fort Mackinac for the murder of Corporal Flinn he received only one dollar a month from his pay. He died on February 1, 1830.

Very little was found on Corporal Hugh Flinn. He enlisted on June 10, 1825 in Newport, KY for 5 years with Company “G” 5th US Infantry. He died on December 5, 1828.

In 1829 Private James Brown was accused of murder for shooting Corporal Hugh Flinn. This incident took place in the mess hall before fifteen witnesses. Brown claimed that the musket discharged accidentally, and he was unaware that it was loaded. He was then confined in the guardhouse and later transferred to Green Bay for trial before Judge James Doty. In October eight soldiers went to Green Bay to testify. Brown was found guilty and sentenced to be hanged on November 25 on Mackinac Island. He was granted a stay of execution until the following February, pending his appeal to the President. While in jail, the Reverend William Ferry tried to convert Brown to Christianity, but he showed little interest in religion. On December 8, 1829 Territorial Governor Lewis Cass wrote to Sheriff Edward Biddle informing him that President Andrew Jackson had refused to pardon Brown. Cass instructed Biddle to carry out the sentence on the proper date, which was February 1, 1830. Reverend Ferry gave the news to Brown, who appeared to be unmoved although he still maintained his innocence.
