Mershon Cemetery is final resting place for ancestors of Henri Marshon. In 1685, Marshon of Normandy, France set out on a journey to America with his wife and son to escape the war against protestants. The spelling of the family name changed to Mershon upon their arrival in the new land. Henry Mershon the II and his brother Andrew both served as volunteers in repelling the French and Indian attacks upon defenseless frontier settlements. They both served under General George Washington in the Revolutionary War.
After the war, Henry the II brought his family to the new territories of Ohio as part of the land grant given veterans of the Revolutionary War. It is here Henry Mershon, Jr was born. Six more generations of Mershons have been born here and still call Scioto County home.
Members of the families Mershons married into rest in peace here as well.
Also interred here are a couple of generations of Piatts. The Piatts were neighbors of the Mershons near here. The Pyeatts descended from Jacob Pyeatt (1747-1813) who was a Pennsylvania Indian Trader. Jacob joined the Rogers and Clark expeditions into the wild west before settling down here. His son John Piatt became a wealthy farmer. Some of their kin folk not buried here are at Piatt Cemetery in Nile Township. Two of John Piatt’s sons- Oliver and Minor were murdered on the Adams/Scioto Counties line at Rocky Fork back in 1910. Their murder remained unsolved. A third son, John Jr. was listed of dying in an automobile accident when the onslaught of the first cars came about.
