Geocache Description:

A pleasant stroll along a section of the Forth and Clyde canal close to where it meets the river Clyde.

This walk is flat on a good cinder path until the last couple of hundred feet and is about a 2.5 mile round trip if you do the whole walk. You could probably get the clues you need by driving between some parts of this cache, but then that would spoil the pleasure of the walk, wouldn’t it? The co-ordinates above are for the suggested parking place.

The building of the Forth and Clyde canal began in 1768 and for a long time was a busy route between Glasgow and Edinburgh, joining the Union canal at Grangemouth. Use dropped dramatically after the Second World War and the canal was closed to all traffic in January 1963. The Millennium Link Project enabled its full re-opening in 2001 and boats can now travel the entire canal from Bowling to Grangemouth and Edinburgh via the Falkirk Wheel.

There is parking for several cars at: N55 55.240 W004 27.382

Start your walk along the canal to the lock at N55 55.354 W004 27.419 and gather some clues.

A = the second digit of the number of this lock gate.
C = the number of stars at the bottom of the milestone by the lock minus three

There are directions to two places on this milestone. One is Clydebank.
D = the number of kilometres to the ‘other’ place.

Now continue along the canal to N55 55.488 W004 27.810 where you will find a small wooden bridge with an info plaque about ‘The Saltings’.

B = The number of logos of the organisations supporting this project which are depicted at the bottom of this plaque PLUS the number of hours which the plaque suggests you should take to walk the whole project at a leisurely pace.

Continue your walk to a bridge at: N55 55.551 W004 28.092 and look for two digits painted in white on a black oval on the lower side of the bridge itself.
E = The first digit x 2
F = The second digit

Not far to go now!
Navigate your way along the path to: N55 55.801 W004 28.814 where there is one of 1,000 Millennium mileposts at the water’s edge.

G = The number at the very top of the milepost MINUS 2.
H = The number of miles from this post to Balloch MINUS 5.

Now you can go and find the box at: N55 55.ABC W004 DE.FGH
The area where the cache is hidden is clearly used by people to get to the water’s edge and although it is off the main tow path, please take care to camouflage the box well when replacing it.
