This cache is on a bridleway, which runs at high level beside the River Thames from Whitchurch to Goring. The cache can be approached either from Whitchurch or Goring. If approaching from Goring, go past Goring railway station and follow the road to a lay-by at coordinates N51.31.007, W001.07.618. Follow the right hand fork to Gatehampton Manor and then the left hand fork, which is the start of the bridleway. The cache is approximately 0.83 miles from the parking spot.
Close to the cache is a pillbox. This was part of a network of defences, which were hastily built in 1940 all over the British Isles to prevent an anticipated German invasion. With the passage of time it is estimated that less than 6,000 of a total of 28,000 pillboxes built still survive. They remain as permanent monuments and a silent tribute to the courage and tenacity of the British people during the dark days of 1940 when Britain stood alone against Nazi Germany.
