Geocache Description:

The howl of the wolf can still be heard in the graveyard behind Wright's Chapel.

"The legend of the Wright's Chapel Wolf dates back to around 1835. It is not written about in any history books but the story lives on through oral tradition.

On June 23, 1835, a fierce storm blew up while Sunday Mass was going on. The congregation heard the thunder and howls of the wind but thought nothing of it, it was just the storm. But as the storm raged on the people in the back of the chapel began to hear a growl coming from just outside the doors. One man, Hopkins Wright, decided to investigate. He walked over to the chapel doors and opened them. He saw nothing, not even any signs that something was there. Mr Wright then closed the door and took his seat. Again the growls could be heard coming from outside the chapel doors. Mr.Wright got up again to go check. But before he made it to the door, there was a crash of lightining and the doors bust open revealing a huge black wolf with eyes of fire.

The congregation stared at the beast. It was like a nightmare invading reality. The people watched as the wolf it made its way down the center isle towards the pulpit. No one was sure what to do. Even the Reverend was at a loss. He began to shout at the creature but it didn't scare off. He recited Biblical passages yet the beast came closer and closer. The black wolf then stood in front of the alter and let loose a demonic howl that shook the very foundation of the chapel. The noise was unearthly to say the least. Every man, woman, and child in attendance felt it in the pit of their stomachs. The beast then turned around and took flight, back through the doors and into the storm.

The next day some of the people found black paw prints burned into the grass, leading through the graveyard, to the resting place of an unknown person. The marker was a wooden cross with no name. The people weren't even sure as to who's grave it was. That was the last the people ever saw of the beast. The mystery of the Wright's Chapel Wolf was never solved and to this day, some say you can hear the beast howling just before a storm."

The cache is NOT located in the cemetary. Follow the dirt trail through the graveyard and into the woods to begin your search. If you decide to check out the graveyard, please be respectful. There are a few Civil War vets and tons of children buried here. You can also see the foundation of the church as you walk up the stairs.
