Geocache Description:

A short walk from Caw Gap where there is limited free parking – or a slightly longer walk from Cawfields Quarry where there is NT parking or free parking at N54 59.649 W002 26.813.

From Caw Gap cross the road and go through the kissing gate, to embark upon a superb section of consolidated Wall. Pass the outline of Turret 41a, then on to where the path steps down quite steeply to Thorny Doors, the Wall momentarily standing 14 courses high coping with the pitch of the slope.

In reverse start from Cawfields Quarry and follow the line of the wall up from the quarry past milecastle 42, set awkwardly on a slope above hole gap - a Great Tower once stood at the gateway of this milecastle making it quite a landmark. It is thought that the fort and milecastle towers were the ‘crows nests’ of the frontier, which explains why the turrets were removed and why current thinking has dismissed the notion of a wall-top walkway. Milecastle 42 blocked the natural weakness of the Whin Sill at Hole Gap, forcing carts to plod through this steep control.

Proceed along the wooded scarp of Cawfields Crags past Turret 41b and descend gradually down the slope to Thorny doors. There are tremendous panoramas of wonderful countryside to the north and south and along the Wall snaking into the distance to the east and west.
