This cache is located about a hundred feet south of the cabin site
of former Chicago Mayor "Big Bill" Thompson. Purportedly, the cabin
was built for him by the island's owner, Chester Thordarson. A
photo of the cabin is on display in the boathouse. The cabin has
long since been torn down and the basement filled in. A stone
staircase leading to the rocky beach below remains (watch your
step). Halfway down the staircase you'll find the entranceway to
the old basement intact. The remnants of the double wooden doors
still hang from hinges.
This cache is intentionally placed well away from the actual
cabin site to prevent disruption of the remains. It is also placed
away from the bluff to make it safe and family friendly, but there
is a twenty-five foot drop-off nearby, so keep an eye on the
kids.
I'm listing this cache as a 3/3 because of the difficulty
getting to the island, but after you've made it to the dock, it's a
1/1 from there.
This cache was placed after consulting with the park's
naturalist and has been approved by the park manager, Kirby Foss.
The
Cache Placement Form 2500-118 was submitted and signed. We
thank the staff for their help and cooperation.
