Geocache Description:

This cache is dedicated to the memory of SherwoodForest. His untimely passing kept me from getting to know him as well as I could have, and should have.

In the few short months that I knew Eric, I came to refer to him as our "Brilliant Navigator", after he led our team around like an expert during the Alien Encounter caching event in September of 2005. In many ways this nickname suited him perfectly, as he was always ready, willing, and able to show us the way.

As a relatively new geocacher, Eric's Spirit Trail caches helped teach me that geocaching in cemeteries does not show any disrespect for those who rest there. Rather it brings us to these hallowed places so that we can honor those who have gone before us, and marvel at the lives they must have led so long ago, and share the pain for those who were taken at such a young age, and even feel a sense of our own mortality.

I hope you enjoy my very first cache hide, a cemetery cache dedicated to SherwoodForest. As always, please show the proper respect for all who rest here. Cemetery hours are from sunrise to sunset. Absolutely no night caching is allowed! The cache is Eric's container of choice for several of his Spirit Trail caches, an Apex pill container. Bring your own pencil or pen and please close the container tightly and rehide it exactly as you found it.

There is a coupon in the cache for the first finder that can be redeemed for an unactivated NEOGEO cachers coin, which is trackable on geocaching.com. The back of the coin has Eric's signature phrase printed on it, "Cache Well, And See You Around The Bend." Please take the coupon with you and email me with the information on it so that I can arrange to get the coin to you.

Eric "SherwoodForest" was a very special geocacher. A self-proclaimed Ambassador, he not only represented the Northeast Ohio Geocachers at events in other areas, he was also an advocate for the entire sport to park districts, lawmakers, and even people on the street.

You might think that with an attitude like this, Eric would have been arrogant or boastful. Nothing could be further from the truth. Eric had a mild demeanor that earned him the common description "Gentle Giant". Eric won friends by listening. He encouraged and welcomed the people who were least convinced of their sanity in enjoying such an underground sport. He encouraged people on to their personal bests and challenged all of us to expect more from ourselves.

Eric is partly responsible for many big geocaching initiatives in Ohio. He was instrumental in the formation of GeocacheOhio (GO) and the Midwest GeoBash. He helped promote the All-Ohio Women's Event and aided in the flight of the men-folk with the matching "Ohio Men's Escape Weekend".

Eric is truly missed, but in so many ways his influence is all around us. It's in the people, the caches and the culture of geocaching. To represent this, we have chosen to dedicate a series of caches that we hope will represent the impact that our friend, SherwoodForest, had on our sport and our lives.

As Eric would say, "Cache well, and see you around the bend."
