Geocache Description:

Yet another historically significant location. The cache is a small Geocache Lock'n'Lock. The location is pretty out of the way and Muggles shouldn't be an issue, although the day I planted it I ran into a local offering prayer for those who died in the Battle of Okinawa.

On June 18, 1945, the Commander of American ground forces on Okinawa, General Simon Bolivar Buckner, was observing 2nd Marine Division at a forward observation post on Maezato
Ridge. At 1315, a Japanese shell impacted the observation post. The blast wounded several Marines and broke loose a fragment of coral rock, lodging it in General Buckner's chest. Within ten minutes he was dead, the highest ranking American officer to perish in the Battle of Okinawa. Marine General Roy S. Geiger then became the senior commander on Okinawa and took charge of the Tenth Army, making him the first Marine General to command an Army. General Geiger led the Tenth Army through the end of the campaign, until General Joseph Stilwell took command on June 23.

One of the other monuments at this location is to Brigadier General Claudius M. Easley, the assistant commander of the 96th Division. General Easley was known to emphasize marksmanship to the troops of the 96th; his initiatives earned the 96th the nickname "Deadeyes." The day after General Buckner was killed, General Easley was in his favorite place, on the front line spotting an enemy machine gun position for his troops, when two rounds from the enemy weapon struck him in the forehead.

The Japanese monument 200 feet southeast of Buckner's monument was erected by the town of Maezato to memorialize 12,000 Japanese and Okinawans that died in the area during the Battle of Okinawa.
