Geocache Description:

DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS CACHE AT HIGH TIDE.

This cache is located just past the Watchtower and is a small camouflaged cache. You will need to ascend the rocks to reach the cache so please mind your step.

Watchtower Bay takes its name from the watchtower built there in the 1860s, when this would have been the entrance to Barry Docks, by the Coastguard. Prior to the opening of the lifeboat station in Barry Island lifeboats would have been launched from here.

Since then it has also been a tea-room and home to The 6th Barry Sea Scouts. Unfortunately, in spite of it being a grade II listed building it now looks quite sorry for itself.

Watchtower Bay itself is separated from the old harbour by York Breakwater which extends out across from The Little Island, and affords views of Flat Holm, Steep Holm and Brean Down.

Parking and toilet facilities are at the Knap car park, coordinates are N51 23.635 W003 18.905
