I recently adopted this cache location after the cache went missing from user: vincenzosi. The location of the cache has most likely changed although the coordinates are still the same.
GORDAN TRIANGLE
.07 acre
Private Edward F. Gordan, a native of Long Island City, served in the United States Army as a member of Company C of the 165th Infantry. He was killed in action in World War I, on July 30, 1918.
The jurisdiction of this property was for many years in dispute. On July 11, 1911 the Queens Department of Parks separated from the Brooklyn-Queens Department of Parks. Having assumed that this land was Parks property, the 1912 Annual Report of the Queens Department of Parks recorded the land as “an eyesore,” and soon thereafter drew up plans for reconstruction, including the installation of iron picket fencing, lighting, and planting.
The property was first called Cassidy Angle after Joseph Cassidy (1860-1920), the second Borough President of Queens. Cassidy was a Long Island City native who grew up in the Blissville area, where he became a florist. From 1902 to 1905, Cassidy served as Borough President of Queens and quickly became became infamous as a scandalous politician. When he was running for re-election in 1905, the NYC Commissioner of Accounts discovered Cassidy’s many corrupt activities, and ended his political career. In 1915, Cassidy was convicted of having sold a United States Supreme Court nomination for $25,000. He was sentenced to 18 months in Sing-Sing prison, but was released on parole after only a year. He then moved to Rockaway, where he became a real estate agent and died at the age of 60 on November 21, 1920.
Gordan Triangle took its present name on June 14, 1932.
This little oasis of greenery in the midst of factories, flies an American flag in patriotic tribute to the Private’s memory.
Cache is easy and locatable on just about any day except the first Sunday in November. This is the day of the NYC Marathon and this location is at Mile 14. Sit a spell and enjoy the race.
