The Long Beach Convention Center and most of the area around it are on landfill, where Ocean Boulevard to the north used to be the shorline bluffs. From the Druids -- ...remembers walking the entire half-circle on the rocks that formed Rainbow Pier. At that time there was a lagoon within the pier that surrounded the 1930's Municipal Auditorium with beaches on both sides. http://www.millikanalumni.com/Pike/RainebowEmailStories.html The lagoon was filled in for the Arena, then the pier removed entirely about the time the current Convention Center was started and the land was extended further out. The Rainbow Pier rocks were covered over and later caused major havoc with piling being driven for the most recent Convention Center project. Ahhhh, nothing like the good old days!! Today, the Long Beach Convention Center http://www.longbeachcc.com/mainmenu.asp is situated in a great location that is growing with excitement each and every day.
