This is a regular cache located in Hubbard County Park, Flanders/ Hampton Bays. There are some mild to moderate terrain changes. The length of the hike will depend on where you enter the park.
This is a huge beautiful park with tons of trails (most well-defined, some not-so-well defined) and very few people. It's a great place to wander if you have the time. The diversity of plant-life, water-fowl, and other woodland critters is amazing, and should not be missed!
There are a few ways to enter the park-
If you enter from Rt 24:
This way is quicker and less of a hike. You can park right off Rt 24 on the north-bound side. Coordinates N40 53.707 W072 34.891. (Thanks Rizz & Company!)The trail there isn't marked, but is well defined. It should be pretty clear cut from there.
This trail takes you through a beautiful pine forest and over a tiny bridge that crosses Mill Creek.
If you enter the park from Red Creek Rd:
This route is longer, but will take you along an interesting trail that goes past the old Hubbard Mansion, into the depths of the park that include neat marshes, boggs, and through groves of mountain laurel (one of my favorites)that bloom in the spring, some Atlantic White Cedars, among other interesting indigenous plants. Follow the trail past the Black Duck Lodge to the park gates and take the first left fork. From there, continue on, and at the next intersection, take the trail leading north(ish)to the right. From there you should have no problem.
Special thanks to devilduckies for the container!
So, please enjoy the park, the hike, the wildlife, and the scenery on the way to the cache!
As usual, bring bug spray (just in case), and a camera!
